The Benefits Of Water Liposuction

By Christina Potter
Water liposuction is a gentle and safe option for those who have areas of stubborn fat which need to be removed. Weight loss is not the objective here but dealing with problem areas which do not respond to diet or exercise. For example, you may have a genetic tendency towards lumpy thighs. You can exercise or diet as much as you like but the lumps remain.

This procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and a local anesthetic is used. The amount of time required for the procedure depends partly on the size of the area being treated. It may take one to three hours to perform. The most commonly treated areas are the abdomen, back, thighs, backs and knees.

The local anesthetic is injected through tiny incisions which heal up very quickly after the procedure. A pressurized stream of saline is sprayed through the tip of a long, thin instrument called a cannula. This loosens the fat cells from the connective tissue. These cells are then vacuumed out of the body.

The use of local anesthetic means there is less risk than that associated with a general anesthetic. A patient can leave as soon as treatment has been completed. Recovery time does vary but is usually quick and relatively painless. Most patients will be free of discomfort after a few days.

The procedure is a very gentle one, involving minimal bleeding, swelling or bruising. This is vastly different from more traditional procedures which can cause trauma to the body tissue because the cannula is used aggressively to break up the fat. With this procedure the fat is gently and slowly loosened by the stream of water. In the past, patients could be laid up for weeks with severe bruising.

Another benefit is that the results obtained using this method are excellent. The cosmetic surgeon has more control over where fat needs to be removed as there is less swelling. The body can be properly contoured during the procedure. The results are permanent as the fat cells do not grow again once they are removed. This means that one procedure for an area is enough.

Water liposuction does not destroy the fat cells but gently loosens and removes them. They may even be used to enhance another area of the body such as the face or hands. One must make sure that a board certified plastic surgeon is performing the procedure. Choosing a surgeon who has performed the procedure often will usually guarantee better results.
